Franz thought it was a terrible idea, which shouldn’t have surprised any of us, but his arguments apparently annoyed Andrea enough that she became determined to help me get around him.

Amilia used the servants’ grapevine to get the ambassador’s schedule—and so I found myself hiding behind a garland-wrapped column, lying in wait outside the council chamber as the French ambassador and his entourage approached for a meeting.

I stepped into his path, cringing when I saw that his arm was still in a sling. “Votre Excellence?” The French flowed easily off my tongue, surprising me.

The ambassador paused when he saw me, smiled, and bowed. “Votre Altesse Royale. How are you?”

Grateful for the switch to English, even though I seemed to inexplicably be able to speak French when I didn’t think about it, I met his kind eyes. “Do you think I could have a moment of your time?”

“Of course,” he murmured in accented English, waving his entourage ahead of him into the council chamber. “What can I do for you?” he asked when we were alone.

“I wanted to apologize for the other night. The nutcracker. Je suis désolée. I never intended…”

“My dear child. Don’t you think I know that? It was an accident. And a rather amusing one, once I saw the video.”

I groaned. “How can you laugh? I feel horrible.”

“We can’t have that,” he said with a smile. “Come now. All is forgiven. Though there was nothing to forgive. Women in your condition have done far worse.”

Condition? He seemed to have a good command of English, but perhaps he meant position. Or maybe he was referring to my supposed illness from earlier that day. Either way, I wasn’t about to reject his forgiveness when it was offered.

“Thank you for understanding.”

He squeezed my hand and gave me a wink, then turned toward the council chamber. “Now for the boring part.”

I smiled, marveling that he was so extremely understanding. Almost ridiculously understanding. But maybe that was a function of the wish? I was still mulling over the conversation when I returned to my suite—

And then I saw the papers.
